Cyrano

Cyrano

The fictional Cyrano de Bergerac (from the play by the same name) was an intriguing character. He was a remarkable duelist, a musician, and a talented and joyful poet. Sadly, he let his extremely large nose steal the confidence to pursue Roxane, the woman he loved; and he used his gift for words to help a more handsome man with a much duller wit win Roxane’s heart.

Ouch.

I think there may be a little of Cyrano in all of us at some point in our lives. How many times have we held ourselves back from our dreams because we felt somehow unworthy of them?

Ouch. Ouch.

That hurts. Let’s not do that anymore.  Deal?

Angel 54

Angel 54

If you’re as old as I am, you might remember Agent 99 from Get Smart. She was smart, skilled and often played a big part in righting the blunders of Agent 86, Maxwell Smart.

I imagine the owner of this license plate as an agent for good: Angel 54 driving about, helping, lifting, empowering.

Kind of makes me want to be Angel 55. Or maybe Angel #9, because 9 is a magic number.

Wonder

Wonder

Japanese Christian leader Toyohiko Kagawa once said, “May I never find myself yawning at life.” (Zen and the Art of Anything, Hal W. French)

Living life in wonder is the perfect antidote for boredom.

Ms. Cool

Ms Cool

That pretty much says it all, doesn’t it? I mean, cool is all-encompassing. Being cool–or even better, Ms. Cool–implies certain things. Confident, witty, calm under pressure, a better than average dresser…all things I’d like to be when I grow up.

Fortunate

Fortunate

Being around people who see themselves as fortunate is always such a pleasure. They are continually thankful, they rarely complain, and they’re usually pretty joyful.  I kinda like that in a person.

Ojala

Ojala

Ever notice that things often sound better when uttered in a language other than your own?

Ojala (pronounced: o – HA – la) is Spanish for “I wish” or “I hope”.

Because wishing or hoping for something can be intensely personal–like praying–saying it in another language seems even more fitting; like you’re keeping a sweet secret.

One of my favorite wishes is for everyone–everyone–to find joy.

Ojala.

Why is it?

Why is it?

Some people are just born curious. These people make really good scientists (why is it that light travels faster than sound?) or journalists (why is it that most people don’t vote in elections?).

These people also make really good conversation. Asking why opens up a world of options and opportunities that a simple yes or no question doesn’t allow.  For example, why is it that men never replace the roll of toilet paper?  Or, why is it that women constantly wonder if their clothes make them look fat?

Why. Is. That?

Love to Laugh

Love to Laugh

Did you know laughter can be a good gauge for the health of a relationship? According to an article in Psychology Today:

  • Laughter establishes–or restores–a positive emotional climate and a sense of connection between two people.
  • Laughter plays a big role in mating. Men like women who laugh heartily in their presence.
  • The laughter of the female is the critical index of a healthy relationship.
  • Laughter in relationships declines dramatically as people age.

Love to laugh.  And, apparently, laugh to love.

Hop On In

Hop On In

Seeing this playful invitation on a convertible Mercedes driving down the highway with the top down is enough to make a person want to call in a mental health day.

Quick show of hands–who here needs more play time in your life?

Yep.  Me, too. Hop on in, let’s go for a ride…
